Drawings Shown

two contrasting approaches to the nude are shown in these drawings from the exhibition, “Drawing Toward Painting,” at present on display in the Canterbury Society of Arts gallery in Gloucester Street. At top is a series of detailed nude studies by the Wellington artist John Drawbridge; and below is a lire drawing by Ralph Hotere, of Dunedin. Hotere a leading minimalist painter, is this year’s Hodgkins Fellow at the University of Otago.

These drawings are not finished works; they are working drawings—notes for future paintings. Don Peebles,- the Christchurch artist who has compiled the, show for the C.S.A., described the drawings last week as “the sort one would find lying round the studio.” and he has arranged them round the gal-

lery in much the way the artists might pin them on their studio walls. Paintir.gs by the six artists involved (some of them extensions of the ideas expressed in the drawings) are also on display. Although the .exhibition will have its full complement today it opened yesterday morning without the work of Melvin Day, director of the National Gallery. The receiving date for the exhibition was last Friday. and Mr Day shipped his works from Wellington last week in time for delivery on Thursday, but they were delayed in transit. They arrived after lunch yesterday, and were hung late yesterday afternoon by Mr Peebles. The exhibition will he open for two weeks.
