Sharks Off Beaches
Large numbers of sharks, some estimated to be 25ft long, have been seen within a mile of Christchurch beaches over the last three days by aircraft of the Canterbury Aero Club, The chib’s operations manager (Mr N. Gibson) said last evening that several aircraft had seen 30 or 40 sharks between North Beach and Godley Head since Saturday. "I would have thought that they could have been easily seen from shore," he said. “They were huge—-
the biggest things I have seen apart from whales.” Mr Gibson said that clear water had helped the sightings, and the police had been notified on Saturday and yesterday, when several sharks came within 50 yards of the beach. The New Brighton, police said that they had been told about 2,20 ■p.m. yesterday of large numbers of sharks off the coast. All surf clubs had been not!fled immediately and the few. swimmers had been cleared from the water.
