Rebate Petrol

Sir,—l note that the subject of colouring rebate-petrol has cropped up again in Parliament and that colouring has again been ruled out as impracticable. Remembering the weird and wonderful exhaust smells encountered on the streets of Christchurch during World War 11, and the accuracy with which experts eould determine the additive, such as moth-balls, camphor, benzol, kerosene, etc, causing each particular smell, I wonder why something could not be added to rebate petrol to give it a distinctive smell. Then anyone smelling that particular scent as a vehicle passed could take the number and have the matter investigated. Our scientists could no doubt suggest some suitable substance, which could be smelt and identified in exhaust gas, but. which would not be too repugnant for us fanners to put up with in our daily work.—Yours, etc, SNIFFY.
