Solo Ride To Hokitika
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. T. Hartlll (Taylorville) a former member of the defunct Creymouth Cycling Club who ■ fe U .I*** bed won the National Park round-the-mountaln road race In the North Island, broke the record for a solo ride from Christchurch to Hokitika on Saturday.
Hartlll left Christchurch at 5 a m. and arrived at Hokitika shortly before 3 p.m. He covered 153 miles tn 9hr 49mIn 9.2 see to beat the record established by T. Peach (Canterbury) in 1945. by Ihr 38mln SO.Ssec. Peach was present on Saturday morning to see Hartlll start from Christchurch and wish him luck. '
Hartlll, apart from having to traverse some very steep inclines over the Arthur's Pass route, had to contend with a strong head wind all the way across. He also had a puncture. Many followers of the sport and former members of the Greymouth club were at Hokitika to welcome Hartlll who finished remarkably fresh.
