Vain Too Fast
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent; MELBOURNE. The Victorian colt Vain (10/0 on) got back on his pedestal with his defeat of the New Zealand horse, Daryl'* Joy (6/4) and Wood Court Inn (10/1) In the mile Caulfield Guinea* on Saturday. Vain, with hi* regular jockey, P. Hyland, back In the saddle after a suspension, scored by three lengths from Daryl’s Joy (Setters), with Wood Court Inn (W. D. Skelton) six lengths swsy third. Beginning brilliantly as uausl Vain was in front in the first SO yards and stayed there. Daryl’s Joy got to within a length of him at the turn but Hyland gave Vain more rein and he bounced away. Daryl’s Joy's trainer, S. A. Brown, said he considered the Caulfield mile only equal to seven furlongs at Flemington. "Daryl’s Joy needs the extra distance to beat Vain." Brown aaid that the uphill rise from the Caulfield stalls took too much out of a horse to enable Mm to down a sprinter like Vain over the final furlong. It is likely that Saturday's Valn Daryl's Joy clash will be their last. Daryl's Joy will probably attempt the Caulfield Cup next Saturday before running In the W. S. Cox Plate and the V.B.C. Derby. Vain will bo restricted to shorter events. Wood Court Inn will start next Saturday in the 1000 Guineas, for fillies, at Caulfield and will clash sgstn with the New Zealand-bred Gaelic Spirit. Gaelic Spirit beat the New Zealand filly at Moonee Valley. Ben Lomond’s stablemate, Sir Trutone, faded tn the straight to finish eleventh in the Toorak Handicap (Im) on Saturday. Sir Trutone. ridden by W. A. Smith, needed a win In the event to qualify for a Caulfield Cup Mart, but the others were too good. Crewman (S/l) upset more fancied runners to win by three length* from Magic Ruler (3S/1) and Cast Iron (4/1).
