Paper Tigers Dominate Yachting Events

The new Paper Tiger class wasted little time making its presence felt when the Charteris Bay Yacht Club’s season began on the week-end. Yesterday, when the first race for th* Commodore'* Trophy was sailed in light to moderate north-east winds. Whisker (S. Acktand) and Marlynn (W. Tentory) filled the first two placing* on handicap; a third Paper Tiger. Intruder (E. Orange!, had previously won the opening day race on SaturPaper Tiger* were included in yesterday’* field of 24 . starter* and appear likely to prove something of a handicapper’s headache. Whisker and Marlynn started from a I4mta handicap and were pieced ahead of Erika, a jollyboat vailed by K. Ferna, Catalina (kitty eat. sailed by W. Purvis) and Klmba (cat.. R. Lloyd). A feature of the nice was th* duel between the Finn class yachts, Boffin (B. Winter*) and Loafinn It (P. Pritchett). Loafinn II finally beat Boffin by 32*ec. Klmba, starting from scratch, took the fastest time honours In the open handicap event, and the P class race was won by G. CresweH. sailing Tobby.

BOLD BID Rangiora, sailed by two Baagior* High School pupils. D. Smlthey and B. Whyte, made a bold bld to win the Walmakariel Sailing and Power Boat Club’s opening day event yesterday but succumbed to the challenge of a catamaran. Touche (R. Falkington). After Rangiora. one of four yachts salted by school pupils, had led for two laps, Touche came through to take the lead on the final lap and gain line honours. The three Moth class yachts taking part also had a keen contest before T. Blanchard, sailing Reply, moved ahead to gain fourth placing over all behind Touche, Rangiora and Finegan (M. Willson). sailed by D. Gallagher. Points won in the race count towards the Sheppard Trophy. CAPRIC* UNTESTED Caprice, the Flying Dutchman sailed by G. S. Ma nd er and D. Nixon, scored sn effortless win in the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club's opening day race on Saturday when it crossed th* line 14min 40sec ahead of the field. Handicap honours were won by Papapa. an R class entrant sailed by J. Rountree and T. Harris, which finished in seventh position. The most impressive of the three Finn Class yachts was J. Wearn’s Jollfin which waa placed third on handicap. In the P clasa event D. Partington, sailing Cadet, was the first to finish but was second behind Pippin <3. Smith) in the handicap section.
