Everton Now Five Points Ahead In U.K. Soccer

LONDON. Everton, runaway leader of the first division of the English League, opened a five-point lead as its Merseyside rival, Liverpool, slipped to defeat on Saturday.

Everton hit back after conceding an early goal to beat the bottom dub, Sunderland, 3-1, but Liverpool, runner-up before Saturday's game, lost 0-1 to Newcastle and lost second place on goal average to Derby County, who drew 2-2 with Cheteea.

Everton now has 26 points, with Derby and Liverpool both on 21. The reigning champion, Leeds United held on to fourth place on goal average by drawing 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion. Coventry and Wolverhampton Wanderers joined Leeds on IS points. Leeds has played two games fewer than Everton but is eight points behind. The top four teams tn the second division all lost. Sheffield United kept the lead on goal average although losing to Swindon, which moved to within two points of the leaders. The sec-ond-placed Queen's Park Bangers lost at Norwich and -Huddersfield moved into third place by beating Charlton. The third division leader, Luton Town, lost Its unbeaten record when beaten 2-0 by Doncaster. Rovers, but stayed a point ahead of Barnsley and Torquay. Luton's defeat left the fourth division club, Port Vale, as the only unbeaten team among the 92 English League clubs. Vale leads on goal average from Wrexham.

Hibernian continued to set the pace In Scotland with a brilliant 3-1, away victory over Rangers. This followed Hlbs’ earlier win over Celtic. The second-placed Dunfermline lost to Marton and Dundee United and Celtic both won to move closer. The most remarkable match of the day was in the Scottish second- division between Falkirk and Queen of the South, which produced 12 goals, Falkirk winning 7-5.
