Motz In Form With Bat And Ball

Only a typically forthright innings of 74 by R. C. Motz enabled Riccarton to finish the day comfortably placed tn its match with west Chrlstchurch-Univers-Ity. Until Motz's arrival at the wicket the Riccarton scoring had been very slow, but with a six elf the first ball he received, Motz signalled! his Intent to speed up the tempo. With B. P. Isherwood proving a capable ally, Motz hammered the spin bowling of P. A. Sharp and C. M. Kirk. The partnership added 100 runs in 85 minutes w|th Motz's 74 taking 92 minutes and including four sixes and six fours. Motz gave only one chance, a not too difficult one to mid-off from Sharp’s bowling when he was 33. After the dismslsal of Motz and Isherwood. the Riccarton batsmen offered little resistance to Sharp and Kirk, both of whom were able to extract turn out of the wicket. R. K. Allen, who has returned to senior cricket after a season’s absence, was in fine form behind the stumps and with three catches and two stumpings had a hand in more than half the Biccarton wickets

to fall. J. W. Kiddey had to attend a wedding in the afternoon and was not able to bat. T. W. Jarvis and B. Bhana began steadil}' for West-Univer-sity but after Motz had bowled Jarvis the pressure was on the batsmen. P. W. Hammant, having his first senior match, kept the batsmen pinned down with bowling of good pace and commendable accuracy, and his figures of three for 18 off 11 overs give some insight into the respect he commanded. The left-arm spin of P. G. D'Auvergne also gave the WestUniversity batsmen little chance to gather runs. C. W. Garrod looked to be gaining in confidence but the return of Motz for another spell removed him from the wicket. With only one wicket standing and still 48 runs behind, West-University faces no easy task if it is to have the match. However, the side could live for the rest of the week in the hope that Motz will fail in the second innings and sq place the teams, from Saturday’s performances anyway, on about equal footUmpires: Messrs L. C. Johnston and J. C. Slater,
