Sydney Church 150 Years Old
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, Oct. 12. St James's Church, Sydney, vill celebrate its 150th anniversary with special services his week-end. The stone Anglican Church, he oldest in Australia, was juilt by convict labour in LBl9 to a design by Francis Ireenway, an emancipated lonvict, the first architect of Hew South Wales. Commissioner Thomas Bigge, who had been sent from Britain to investigate :omplaints of excessive expenditure in the colony, Hrected Greenway to build the church, in spite of objections by Governor Lachlan MacQuarie, who wanted a courthouse built. St James's Church and the Hyde Park Barracks, built in 1819, now stand in a parkland Island of colonial buildings, surrounded by skyscrapers.
