“Good Enough..."

“If it is good enough for the World Council of Churches to maintain contact with churches in South Africa, It is good enough for our Rugby people in New Zealand and South Africa to hold fast to their links,” said Mr H. C. Blazey at a dinner held in honour of the Canterbury Rugby team, the new holder of the Ranfurly Shield. Mr Blazey, a Christchurch city councillor and a former president of the Canterbury and New Zealand Rugby Unions, referred to the AU Black tour of South Africa next year as “a big breakthrough.” It was often forgotten,

he said, that the New Zealand union had turned down a tour of South Africa in 1967, because Maori players were to be excluded. Now, however, the conditions sought by the New Zealand union had been met, and the tour would proceed. “Our Government wants us to go, and the South African Government says we are welcome,” he said. “The vocal minority will remain just that—a minority.”

Mr Blazey, who was proposing a toast to the Canterbury team, said his remarks represented his personal thoughts on the tour issue.
