River Pollution

Sir,—The Kaiapoi River is one of the worst polluted rivers in New Zealand and can only be compared with the lower Heathcote. It has effluent discharged into it from both the Rangiora and Kaiapoi sewerage plants, a woollen mills, a wool-scour-ing plant and a freezing works, as well as numerous discharges from cowsheds. The recent dry spell has aggravated the position by reducing the flow of water in the river, and with the warmer weather approaching this could become a health problem. There has been talk about cleaning this river over the last year or two but very little has been done, and pollution has increased alarmingly over this period. We hear that members of the Water PoUution Council are shortly to examine the position and I hope to see some positive action taken to have this river cleaned up.— Yours, etc., DISGUSTED KAIAPOI RESIDENT. October 8, 1969.
