MANSFIELD AWARDS
First Win By Woman
The Katherine Mansfield Memorial Award, which is now offered for an unpublished short story, has been won by Mrs Alice Glenday, of Palmerston North, for her story, “One Fine Day.” Mrs Glenday is the first woman writer to win this award since its inception in 1959. The young writers’ award (senior) for writers 24 years of age and under, was won by Mr R. N. Lord, of Wellington, who has completed his teachers’ college training and is sitting the final units of his B.A degree at Victoria University. His entry was entitled “Mrs Weeve.”
Mr D. O. Whyte, chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand, joint sponsors of the award with the New Zealand Women Writers’ Society, who announced the winners, referred to this year’s new award for secondary school pupils. This was won by Elizabeth Murdoch, a student of Cambridge High School
The literary awards are for $2OO, $lOO and $5O.
