Jacquinot Bay Win Unpopular
The crowd at Addington Raceway on Saturday night was generally placid. They accepted the victories of Final Donn and Sam Again, two out-oLfortn runners, with hardly a murmur.
Their reaction was the same when K. Newman, reputedly Sydney’s top reinsman, set the odds* on favourite, Young Danny, an impossible task by driving him far off the pace in a six* horse field for the Raceway Stakes.
But there were signs of frayins tempers in some quarters when Jacquinot Bay beat a useful field of sprinters at double-figure odds in the Seaview Handicap. As Mr T. H. Lemon's good stayer coasted past the post at the head of the field a solitary patron in the memben* enclosure voiced hia displeasure. Then there was a hush. But when S. M. Miller brought Jscquinot Bay back to the birdcage be was greeted with a noisy demonstration from patrons in the public enclosure. Jscquinot Bay started his five-year-old racing encouragingly with a third on the first day of the national meeting last month, but in two subsequent starts be failed rather badly. Saturday night's win was an important one in Jacquinot Bay’s spring campaign. Because of that success he qualified to start in next Saturday’s Methven Cup. Whether a “roasting” for Jacquinot Bay was justified is only a matter of opinion. His success was no more of a reversal of form than that of Final Donn, Sam Again or Morano Lad. Final Donn had shown nothing of worth in his three previous starts this season yet managed to lead for the last seven furlongs of 13 for a handy win in the Shirley Handicap. AU-The-Way Win The mobile barrier, no doubt, had a bearing on Sam Again's all-the-way win in the Pacific Stakes. It wss the first win for this capable pacer but unreliable beginner for more than 10 months snd the first time be had paid a dividend in seven starts since Esster. The tactics of Young Dsnny’s driver slmost certainly contributed to Morano Lad's success tn the Raceway Stakes. While the favourite dawdled along at the tail of a slow-running field Morano Lad was enjoying the run of the race behind the pacemaking Deference. Newman salt Young Danny around the field when the pace quickened
about two furlongg and a half out but by the time he reached a challenging position Morano Lad was clear and had the result in safe keeping. But Saturday was not altogether a night of set-backs for patrons. Smokey Express (Bowhill Handicap) and Trampus (T. E. Johnston Stakes) both kept winning records at the meeting intact and False Square improved on a last-start third at Herorats by taking the honours in the Malden Event
