Racing Dowry And Munburra Fancied At Orari

Dowry and Munburra will be strongly fancied to win minor races for Washdyke stables at Orari today.

Dowry will be trying for his third successive win in the colours of Mr R. G. Gerard in the Orari Improvers’ Handicap and Munburra is almost certain to be a firm favourite for the Ohape Stakes No. 2 at the Geraldine Racing Club’s spring meeting.

The last time these two raced they were rivals in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton. Dowry led all the way for a handy win in that limited handicap for three-year-olds and Munburra shaped well for a maiden performer to run him to a length and a quarter. Although Dowry is topweight with 8-5 in the Orari Improvers’ Handicap he will not be conceding more than 71b to any of his rivals. The Riccarton trainer, R. P. Register, might saddle two of

Dowry’s strongest rivals. He scratched Strathghanistan yesterday but still has Screened and Te Weka in the field. Screened, which showed winning form in the early two-year-old races last season, lacks racing since May. But everything about her recent gallops in training suggest that she is fit and ready to run a very good six furlongs fresh. The distance will also be very much to the liking of the speedy Te Weka. She was the best of Lady Venture’s rivals in the hack sprint at Oamaru on Saturday. The best of the others might be Martha Bell, an improver’s fourth among the hack sprinters at Ashburton last time out Unless some of the others have undisclosed talents the

• hardest for Munburra to beat j in the Ohape Stakes No. 2 ■ should be Diamond Hunter. Although she has not raced I for more than a month there | was much promise in her first-up fourth for the season behind Ardrose, Titus and Trelay on the final day of the Grand National meeting.. The'field for the Geraldine Cup, first leg of the T.AB. double, remained intact yesterday. Mystic Rose, last of four in the open sprint at Oamaru on Saturday, has dropped out of the second leg, the President’s Handicap. There will be an on-course double on the Rangitata Maiden Stakes and the Woodbury

High-weight The Woodbury High-weight will be the first of six jackpot races. The others will be the Orari Improvers' Handicap, the Geraldine Cup, the Ohape Stakes No. 2, the President’s Handicap and the Belfield Hack Handicap. Fields are:— FIRST LK OF OH-COURSB DOUBLE
