Travel Reductions For Children Urged

A remit asking the Minister of Education to consider allowing school children over the age of 15 years to travel to educational or cultural courses at half fare prices was paMsed by the Christchurch branch of the - National Council of Women at its recent meeting.

The remit, from the Catholic Women’s League, will be :■ brought before the council’s

national executive meeting to be held in Wellington. During discussion on the remit, the Christchurch diocesan president of the Catholic Women's League (Mrs J. R. Cameron) said that at present the majority of children over the age of 15 who attended these courses received the percentage on group travel concessions only. Mrs Cameron mid that these courses were held in several centres in New Zealand and the children who attended them came from Whangarei to Invercargill. In some cases children might even be prevented from attending because of the travel expense involved. “Society is always ready to criticise the young if they get into mischief or if they are on the streets,” she said. “These courses are one way of utilising their holidays.” While the majority of delegates favoured the remit some felt that if the children wanted to go to these courses badly enough they would earn the money themselves.

Mrs Cameron replied that a musician hardly had time to go to work after school as well as practise his music. A remit from the Waimate branch of the council asking that the Government be urged to raise New Zealand's overseas aid to a basic level of 1 per cent of its gross national product was lost The president of the Christ church branch (Mrs G. M. Samson) said that New Zealand was a developing country. If it was to help other developing countries to this extent it would soon be borrowing money to help itself. A remit from the Thames Valley branch asking the Minister of Justice to ensure that advice given on a police court summons be similar to that given on a civil summons was also lost

Mrs M. E. Laurie, who represents the Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council, said that before a criminal charge was laid a person was told of his rights.
