More Classes For Backward Wanted

The establishment in larger secondary school* of more classes for backward and maladjusted pupil* was favoured by members of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women at its recent meeting. A proposal asking that the Government be urged to establish more classes of this kind has been put forward by the Wellington brinch of the council and will be a subject for discussion at the council’s national executive meeting to be held in Wellington.

The proposal also states, however, that the establishment of these classes should not affect the staff-pupil ratio for the rest of the school. Mrs N. A. Fahey, a delegate from the Catholic Women’s League, said that at present in Christchurch these classes, known as experience classes, were established at two secondary schools and four intermediate schools. Another secondary school would be starting classes soon. The branch also approved a remit from the Auckland branch asking the Minister of Industries and Commerce to ensure that a warning regarding the danger of flammable material be circulated in

printed form to all recipients of old age and child benefits, for example on the cover of the benefit book. A note to the remit says that every encouragement should be given to young mothers and elderly people to use non-fiammable material for night wear and other clothing, but many are not willing to pay the extra cost of this material.
