300 Walk At Lyttelton
A three-year-old boy and a man who will be 84 in December, were among about 300 persons who took part in a 10-mile sponsored trek from Lyttelton to Governor’s Bay and back on Saturday, to help raise money for a $45,000 public swimming pool at Lyttelton.
About $l5OO was raised from the walk which was organised by the Parent Teacher Association of the Lyttelton Main School. The chairman of the association (Mrs J. U. Jackman) said yesterday that the oldest person in the trek was Mr W.
Craigie. aged 83, who completed the 10 miles and the youngest person was a three-year-old boy who walked four miles.
Other persons in the trek included the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr J. B. Collett), councillors and three parliamentary candidates. A special prize for the largest family competing in the trek went to the H. C. R. McAlister family, of Godley Quay, which had 14 competitors. Mrs Jackman said that the trek began at 9.30 a.m. and the first person home arrived one hour and 25 minutes later. Most persons arrived about 11.15 a.m. and the last walker completed the trek at 1 p.m. ;
