Jackpot Winner To Get $26,158.50

One better will receive $26,158.50 for an investment of 50 cents by picking the five winners of the jackpot races at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s September meeting on Saturday at Addington Raceway.

The pool increased by 813,600 on Saturday, compared with $7154.50 a fortnight earlier when there was a similar crowd of about 9000.

However, on Saturday syndicates made substantial in-

vestments, one of the largest being $l2OO, while there were many others of between $3OO and $4OO. After successes by Smokey Express, Sam Again and False Square only 42 of the 27,200 combinations remained “alive,” nine of these including Diarac, the winner of the Johns Handicap. There were only six runners in the Raceway Stakes, the final jackpot race. Deference and Young Danny were each the hopes of three betters, two relied on Pine-Globe and only one on Morano Lad. Hal View and Winning Song were not considered. Young Danny, an odds-on favourite with win and place betters, was driven by the

leading Sydney trainer-driver, K. Newman, who is spending a few days in New Zealand. He was a runaway winner on the course a fortnight earlier when allowed to dictate his own pace.

Newman steadied Young Danny from the start and he became awkwardly placed on the inside at the rear of the field. He was switched to the outside and forced wide at the straight entrance. Although he made a game effort to overhaul Morano Lad he was a' length and a half behind at the line. His performance and that of the winner were received in silence by the crowd, which must have seemed strange to Newman, who a, little more than a fortnight earlier earned the displeasure of the crowd at Harold Park, Sydney, to the extent that one patron threw stones at him after he had been beaten.
