Northern S.S. Co. Lays Up Coaster
(New. Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 18. The Northern Steam Ship Company has been forced to lay up one of its coasters, the Awanui, for a number of weeks; and will now consider offers for her use.
The Awanui was put out of service some weeks ago, mainly because of railway competition. The company’s general manager (Mr I. C- Skudder) said today that cargoes from Pacific Steel, Ltd, which used to be carried by the ship had, since April, been sent to the South Island by rail. There was little prospect of finding other trade for her. A report that another of
the line’s coasters, the Maunganui, would also be laid up in the near future, was incorrect, he said. The Maunganui was at present loading general cargo at Onehunga after being fitted with wheat shifting boards, and was to go on the wheat trade when she reached the South Island. Mr Skudder said the company was not considering a merger with any other shipping company-
