MAGISTRATE’S COURT Motorist Fined And Disqualified For Careless Driving

A charge of careless drivini of a vehicle, causing death was reduced to one of care less driving causing bodil: injury, by Mr P. L. Molineaux S.M. in the Christchurci Magistrate's Court yesterday Grant Gee Butler, aged 21 a civil servant, was convictet on the lesser charge, and was fined $4O, ordered to pay wit nesses’ expenses of $26, anc disqualified from driving foi six months. The Magistrate amended the charge because, he said, the facts would not support the major charge of causinj death. Prosecution evidence had been beard on Friday, when the Court was told that a car driven by Butler about 10.30 pjn. on April 19. bad struck a power-cycle ridden by Paul Donald Graham, aged 17. Graham suffered a broken femur In the accident, and later died in hospital. The accident occurred near the intersection of Bassett Street and Travis Road. Skid marks 92ft tong were found, the defendant’s car having come to rest on its incorrect side of the road. Graham was found in front of the ear. PSHIODIC DETENTION Kevin Desmond Tyson, aged 14, a painter, was sentenced tc six months periodic detention when be appeared for sentence on two charges of theft. On charges of failing to give his name after an accident, having no driver's licence and obstructing a traffic officer on the same date he was convicted and ordered to pay costs. The accused pleaded guilty to all charges and was represented by Mr G. B, Lascelles.
