Early Upsets Caused In Basketball Title

(New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI. After only one day of the New Zealand women’s basketball championships at Laird Park, the contest for the first grade title has already become fast and furious.

Two vital matches cast a valuable insight into the final outcome of the championship, and Rotorua, the undisputed champion of many tournaments, featured in both. In the morning, the defending champion, Canterbury, met Rotorua and the tournament had its first upset. Taking advantage of Canterbury's early tournament nerves, Rotorua won, 38-29, to establish its favouritism. But in the afternoon, Rotorua met its match against South Canterbury, which avenged its fellow South Island team's defeat by defeating Rotorua by the same score, 38-29.
