Philosophy Chair
Canterbury University has appointed Mr R. H. Stoothoff, of toe University of Edinburgh, to toe chair of philosophy. ; » Mr Stoothoff was bom in toe United States and graduated from Wabash College, Indiana, in 1957. He has been a lecturer in philosophy at Edinburgh since 1961. He was elected a Marshall scholar and studied for two years at the University of St Andrews. Most of his teaching experience had been in logic and the philosophy of science. Mr Stoothoff, aged 33, did research at Oxford University for three years and taught moral and political philosophy there. Until his arrival early next year toe senior lecturer (Dr G. F. Matheson) will be acting head of the department.
The university has appointed Mr L. N. M. Edward as a lecturer in electrical engineering. He is senior engineer of the Plessey Company in England. Resignations were received from Dr D. R. Hutton, lecturer in physics, and Miss J. Ward, lecturer in botany.
