Crack Units In Action
fXZ.P.A.rßeuiet—Copyright) SAIGON, August 26. Heavy fighting has broken out again south of Da Nang, leaving 12 Americans dead and 90 wounded, the United States Military Command reports. .
Troops of the 196th Brigade of the American Division and of the 7th Regiment of the 3rd Marine Division engaged North Vietnamese regulars throughout yesterday afternoon in two battles only two miles apart.
The fighting was the latest in a series of intermittent clashes in the area which have lead to the deaths of more than 500 Viet Cong and North. Vietnamese, and about 50 Americans, in the past week. About 250 Americans have been wounded, according to a military spokesman in Saigon. Several crack North Vietnamese units have appeared in the northern provinces of South Vietnam since the guerrillas launched their autumn campaign on August
12. Three of the 14 rocket and mortar attacks reported in South Vietnam last night were against United States Marines camps or defence posts around Da Nang. Casualties were light Stratofortress bombers continued to pound Viet Cong supply routes and positions along the Cambodian border early today, flying five raids before dawn between 64 and 74 miles north-west of Saigon.
