Skilful Young Basketballers

The schoolboy players, S. Ferguson and M. King (Christchurch Boys’ High School), have been retained by the Canterbury men’s basketball selector-coach (Mr G. D. Dempsey) for the match against New Zealand Services, at Wigram, on Friday night.

Ferguson, aged 15, was the second highest scorer in the team when he made his open grade provincial debut against New Zealand Universities at Ashburton on Satur-

day night, and surprised everybody with the maturity of his game. At 6ft 3in, he has the build to reach the top in the sport. King also made his Canterbury open grade debut against New Zealand Universities and although he was on the court for only a short time, he did all that was expected of him. Below Strength

Canterbury will still be well below strength for Friday’s match. The two university players, T. Guthrie and A. Taylor, will rejoin the team but three of their colleagues, P. Stigley, J. Utley and J. Culliford, will still be away on tour with the New Zealand Universities side. K. Luxton (Old Boys), who has to attend a wedding, will also be missing. The 6ft 6in centre, R. Mil-: lard, a policeman, may be required for the New Zealand Services team. It has not yet been chosen and Millard has been tentatively included in the Canterbury team. The team is:— A. Hounsell (Old Boys), D. Rattray, M. Clements, R. Millard (Y.M.C.A.), I. Day (Checkers-Y-Boys), T. Guthrie, A. Taylor (University), M. King, S. Ferguson (Christchurch Boys’ High School).
