Waimairi Poll An election will be held on Wednesday, October 1, if necessary, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation last week of Cr O. C. Mitchell from one of. the Fendalton riding seats oh the Waimairi County Council. Nominations will close at noon on September 2, and the supplementary roll of electors will close on September 9. Cadet Courses • About 350 Army cadets : from South Island school i units are at present taking training courses at Burnham Military Camp. Two courses are being held. They began on Saturday and will continue until September L One is for qualification for non-commis-sioned rank and the other is for senior non-commissioned officers. Two hundred and forty-two cadets are taking the former course and 124 the latter. The training is under the direction of the commander of the Dunedin Army area (Major C. R. Hatherley). Woman Member For the first time a woman has been appointed to th'e New Zealand Poultry Board and the New Zealand Egg Marketing Authority. She is Miss M. W. Stewart, of Tauranga, who is a member of the Consumer Council. She will represent the Government on the two bodies. Order For Beer I The United States Navy! has placed an order .withNew Zealand Breweries. Ltd, for 84,000 cans of beer for the Antarctic support force. ■Hie cost is 56160. About 48,000 cans of the Bavarian brand will be shipped to American stations in Antarctica and the remainder will be used at the force’s headquarters at Christchurch Airport.
