Skoda Anniversary
It is 75 years this year since the firin which produced the forerunner of the Skoda car was formed. The company, Laurin and Element, changed its name in 1925 when it was taken over by the Skoda Engineering Works, but the two founders are still remembered as pioneers in motor technology. The original company was formed to make bicycles, later it also made motor-cycles, and I in 1902 it made its first car,
which had a two-cylinder water-cooled engine giving a maximum speed of 25 m.p.h. Today Skoda is one of the major motor manufacturers of Europe, and the company’s vehicles are exported to more than 50 countries.
Laurin and Element also exported—their company sold cars, vans and trucks in the United States, Russia and Japan, and the company made stationary diespl engine*.
