CHECKMATE
A cheque for $16.22, the amount overpaid by the Canterbury Jockey Club to one of the winners of the jackpot on the last day of the Grand National meeting, was returned to “The Press” yesterday by the Christchurch Methodist Central Mission.
Last week the winner I sent the cheque to ‘The ■ Press” saying that “as a - matter of principle” he ' would not return it to the ; club, but did not wish to I keep it either. He asked that it go to “Life. Line. ! But “Lite Liue” has re- - jected it The trustees of ‘ the mission appreciated ‘ the good will of the donor towards the work of the
organisation, the Rev. W. E. Falkingham wrote. They had no desire to discuss the pros and cons, but felt they were not competent to accept the gift, which seemed to stem from a computing error that could be made by any organisation or individual at any time. The donor was telephoned by “The Press” last evening and said: “I am satisfied that I have made my point, but to coin one of Mr Holyoake’s comments: ‘No comment.’” The cheque has been posted back to the donor. He said that if he eent it to any other charity it might be refused, so he would dispose of it privately.
