Bridge Of Remembrance
Sir,—At last some enterprising but misguided motorist has made an unsuccessful attempt to widen our bottleneck memorial bridge. As one who .drove motor vehicles in World War I and who is still driving, I sympathise with him. May I make the following constructive suggestions: dismantle the memorial structure block by block and (1) re-erect it in Rolleston Avenue as an entrance to the Botanic Gardens, or (2) over the Avon at the Armagh Street entrance to Hagley Park, or (3) at the new Town Hall site for pedestrian traffic. Perhaps our Mayor, Mr Guthrey would like to comment. The footpaths on the remainder of the bridge should be removed and a footbridge be built downstream of the bridge. Something : needs to be done.—Yours, etc., B. PRACTICAL 4/2007. July 11, 1969. [The Mayor (Mr A. R. • Guthrey) replies: “The : Bridge of Remembrance will ’ be considered after the im- • piementation of the one-way ' street system.”]
