Victory To Porsches
CN Z.P.A.'Reuter^—Copyright) FRANCORCHAMPS (Belgium). Porsche cars made a clean sweep of the first four places in the Francorchamps 24-hour sports car race.
G. Chasseuil and C. B. Lena (France) romped home with a new record average speed of 110.607 m.p.h. They covered 2654.6 miles of the hilly, triangular course through southern Belgium. The expected Mercedes Benz challenge never materialised as the three 300 SL. models were withdrawn shortly before the race. It was felt their tyres might prove a danger because of the weight of the cars and the intense heat. The race was marred only three hours after the start by the death of 55-year-old Belgian driver, L. Dernier. He was killed when his Mazda spun off the track and struck a parked caravan. No-one else was injured.
