Call For Education On Heart Disease

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, July 29.

New Zealand must find a way to combat heart disease, which had a worryingly high incidently in this country, Mr B. Barratt-Boys head of the cardio-thoracic unit at Green Lane Hospital, told Rotarians yesterday.

He said 32 per cent of deaths every year were from disease of the heart and blood vessels throughout the body. It was the major cause of

premature death among executives.

There was a general fear of cancer, but it was responsible for only 16 per cent of deaths. It affected mainly the elderly and was curable in many instances. There was virtually no cure for cadio-vascular disease because the causes were still not understood. New Zealand needed an organisation similar to the Cancer Society to foster education of the public in heart disease, undertake research and help in rehabilitation of sufferers.

The tax-supported health programme could not be stretched to do more in heart research than it was doing. This was why a private fund now being set up by the Heart Foundation was essential.
