ENROLMENT AT C.G.H.S.

Board Gives Criteria

Concern that there was misunderstanding about the criteria for admission to Christchurch Girls’ High School was expressed at a meeting of the school’s board of governors on Monday. ' The headmistress (Miss J. D. Prisk) said that she and other members of the beard had been dealing with enrolments and there seemed to be widespread misapprehension about the criteria for admission. The academic qualifications were the most important factor, followed by whether a girl had a sister at the school. A few country girls were accepted to the board at the hostel, and then other factors such as distance from the school were taken into account. She said there would always be a certain number of applicants turned down. Admission was not automatic because a girl was the daughter of a former pupil. As far as academic qualifications were concerned this did not mean a girl had to be a genius, said Miss Prisk. It simply meant that she had to have average to good ability. She said it had been said that a girl had to be the daughter of professional people to get in. To this there was a chorus of “no, that is quite wrong,” from board members. There was a time when kinship had been of some importance, but that no longer applied, said the chairman (Professor R. T. Sussex). Mrs M. B. Cox said many heads of primary schools were under some misapprehension as to the situation and that schools should be advised of the true facts before enrolments were due next year.
