Old Collegians Gain Big Squash Lead

J. G. Foulds (Old Collegians) gave a fine allround display to beat J. W. Mitchell (H. 5.0.8. in the A grade squash rackets competition last evening. This win by Foulds enabled his team to gain eight points, giving it a virtually unassailable lead in the competition. The other leading team, Christchurch B, lost on games to Christchurch C, and may be hard pressed to retain second position from the strong High School Old Boys side. The present points are: Old Collegians 90, Christchurch B 76, High School Old Boys 66, Christchurch C 54, University B 51, University A 42, Christchurch A 37 and Christ’s College 32.

. In the first two game* against Mitchell, Fowlds drove and volleyed like a champion, keeping Mitchell to the back of the court.

Mitchell aided by some poor length driving by Foulds won the third but then Foulds again took control. All his play seemed to have purpose; his lobs found the corners, his volleyed boasts kept Mitchell unsettled.

The New Zealand Veteran champion. M. R. Blank (Old Collegians) proved too experienced in the fifth game, for R. McCutcheon (H. 5.0.8. using his fine control to counteract the hard driving of his much younger opponent.

Range of Shota Although losing to R. G. Pattlnaon (Christchurch B) in five games, J. Moseley (Christchurch C) covered the court well and showed a good range of shots. University B now looks to be one of the stronger teams in the competition. A. Maughton was far too consistent for R. D. Monk (Christchurch B) and P. Gallagher gave a polished display to beat N. Herd in three games. Results:—
