MELBOURNE. R. Purser gave New Zealand a 1-0 lead in winning the opening rubber against Australia In the Thomas Badminton Cup last night. Purser defeated M. Rawlings, 15-3, 15-1, in 20 minutes of scintillating badminton., He was too fast and accurate with his shots and was a masterly tactician. The Australian was kept, constantly flat-footed by the slow mid-court shots from Purser. After winning the first game in U .minutes Purser again led 6-0 in the second gome as he capitalised on the weakness of Rawlings’ forehand. They fought long rallies at 6-1, 7-1 and 8-1 but Purser always survived through sheer tactical ability. He won this game in Omin. :
