GUNS IN U.S.
Control Urged (N.Z. P.A.-Reuter—Copy right) WASHINGTON, July 29. A United States Anti-Vio-lence Commission headed by Dr Milton Eisenhower today recommended a nation-wide system of restrictive licensing of privately-owned hand guns as the best way to curb gun violence in the United States.
“The most effective way to reduce gun violence would be a nation-wide system that would eliminate 90 per cent or more of the 24 million privately-held guns in the United States,” the National Commission on the causes and Prevention of Violence said in a report released today.
the commission was formed after the assassination of President Kennedy.
The New York Times News Service reported that under the proposal, the Government would buy the weapons from its citizens—at a cost approaching ssoom. But should the owners fail to turn in the hand guns, the Government would seek their prosecution.
