Preston returns
The return to Christchurch of D. R. Preston will be a boost to squash rackets in the South Island. Preston has spent the last three years in Canada and England. In his last season In Christchurch, 1965, Preston won the South Island title, beating G. L. Bird in the final. He was nominated for the New Zealand team that year and came very close to selection.
J. Stevens, of Auckland, who is the top player in this year’s national side, narrowly defeated Preston in five games to gain the reserve position in 1965. Since leaving New Zealand, Preston has had little good squash but in a Canterbury ranking match last week, he showed in beating J. W. Mitehell, that he is still a fine retriever. If he is prepared to put as much lime into the game as formerly then it would not surprise to see him regain ids previous top ranking.
