Stablemates Picked At Waimate Today

The combined efforts of Radiant Light and White Wine might give iMr W. E. Hazlett, of Invercargill, and his Riverton trainer, W. J. Hillis, a successful day at Waimate today. Radiant Light will form a strong bracket with Verey i Light in the Te Waimate Steeplechase and White Wine is one of the fancied runners in the N. A. Rattray Memorial Steeplechase for amateur riders.

Radiant Light will be trying to keep a winning record intact. Mr Hazlett’s good jumper was a dual winner over the tough Riverton country at Easter so the lighter Waimate fences should pose him no problems at all.

The only question is whether lack of recent racing will affect his finishing run at the end of two and a half miles.

On recent form the hardest for Radiant Light to beat should be Desert Wind— Kumai’s conqueror at Washdyke a fortnight ago. Although this Washdyke jumper is inclined to get ! back in the early stages of his races stamina is one of i his strong points and, usually, I his jumping cannot be faulted.

Gladaub, a winner over the Waimate country in May, Gillie, if he runs in this in preference to the Rattray Memorial, and Nelhaven will also have their share of followers but Radiant Light and Desert Wind are bound to be the most popular fancies. White Wine, an improver’s fourth over the Washdyke country a fortnight ago, will have the services of the successful Waikato amateur rider, B. R. Tims, in the Rattray Memorial.

Another north-south combination in the same race will be Claremont, which is to be ridden by the Wellington district amateur rider, R. Judd. : But most opposition for •White Wine might come (from Gillie, the runner-up to Lonvato at Oamaru last Saturday, and Dry Time, which won this race 12 months ago and raised hopes of another victory with a last-start plac-. ing over country at Oamaru. Stephanair and My Boa are ■ fancied for the T.A.B. double,

which will be run on the Morven Handicap and the Waihao Hack Handicap. There will be an off-course concession double on the Studholme Hack Hurdles and the Novice Stakes. Continuing fair weather is forecast and the track will be in good winter order. Fields are:— FIRST LEG OF ON-COURSE DOUBLE 11 a.m.— STUDHOLME HURDLES $460; 13f.
