Denmark has become the first country In the world to abolish all censorship for adults. A liberalised law . . . removes legal barriers to publishing pictorial pornography and showing pornographic films ... A boom In written pornography after ft was made legal in 1967 was followed soon by a slump which left publishers with large unsold stocks . . . psychiatrists of the State Medico-Legal Council reported they could find no evidence that pornography was' harmful or likely to have an adverse eSect on tex crime rates.—News item. Do You detect a Smell, Sir? Is It perhaps the Drains? A Gas that You can’t dispel, Sir, Always a Trace remains. Pull up the Floors! Throw open the Doors! Tackle It like the Danes. It wouldn’t do, I’m afraid, Sir. ■ I’m sure We’d never dare. We putty the Chinks instead, Sir, We spray the tainted Air, Holding our Noses, thinking of Roses, Pretending It isn’t There. Pornography is a Thing, Sir, That’s difficult to suppress, .What do We do but cling, Sir, To the Hope of Half-success? A Tribunal’s Finding (on Price, and Binding), A Customs Officer’s Guess? And the weekly Billboards blaze, Sir, Our common, candid Taste, Since your smutty schoolboy Days, Sir, Can any Change be traced? .Whatever was naughty in Nineteen-Forty, And hasn’t been replaced. The Prurient and the Prude, Sir, Prefer their Peeps half-hidden. The semi-averted Nude, Sir, No Posture that’s forbidden, A Bin to conceal the Thrills they steal, And a Law to hold the Lid on. The Danes can do as They do, Sir. It’s not how WE behave! It’s a Local Industry, too, Sir, Whose Flag I’m proud to wave, Not selfish Enjoyment, think of Employment! And the Foreign Exchange we save!
