Scientology

Sir,—The commission of inquiry into , the Hubbard Scientology organisation in New Zealand was another example of the quasi-judicial procedures which permit the continued existence of evils within a pretence of public scrutiny. You are completely wrong in stating that the practice of psychology is governed by legislation. Any charlatan, quack, or enthusiastic amateur can practise psychology, psychotherapy, and a lot of other “therapies” pertaining to mental health, without hindrance, and, indeed, is more likely than a qualified person to be given space in your paper. I have twice attended courses in Scientology in Christchurch. On neither occasion was a Church of Scientology mentioned. Evidence which I could give of evil results of Scientology were not acceptable under the restricted, narrow order of reference, yet the commissioners allowed Scientologists to play their whole gamut of vicious criticism of psychology and psychiatry.—Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. July 4, 1969.
