Cricket loss
Dr R. H. Bettington, who was killed when his car ran off the road near Gisborne recently, was a former captain of the New South Wales state cricket team. He also captained Oxford University and a member of his team there was Lord Cobham, later to become Governor-General of New Zealand. During his term in New Zealand, Lord Cobham was a frequent Visitor to Napier as a guest of Dr Bettington. Dr Bettington was ear, nose and throat specialist
to the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board and before coming to Napier in the early 1950 s was ear, nose and throat specialist at Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney. As well as being a fine cricketer, Dr Bettington was also an excellent golfer. He married Miss M. Lowry, a daughter of T. C. Lowry, who captained the 1927 New Zealand cricket team to England. Another of Mr Lowry’s daughters married A. P. F. Chapman, the former England cricket captain.
