Inside Story Picked

f, The Press’* Special Service

AUCKLAND. The winning of open handicaps seems almost a preogrative these days of the Cambridge trainer, W. W. Townsend. Inside Story, one of his three representatives in the Churchill Handicap at Avondale today, looks a great chance to win him another.

A winner three times already this season. Inside Story will be having one of her last races for Mr S. G. Tregonning, who has her on lease from Mr J. L. Macky, the master of the Pirongia Stud. The lease will expire at the end of this month. Inside Story won her last race, at Tauranga on June 21, narrowly but well. Since then she has been consistently good In training, an Indication that she has again reached the peak of form which enabled her to score three firsts from four starts during a period last winter.

Proud Chief and Blue Winter

finished eecond and fourth respectively In the corresponding event on the first day, and both promise to race well again. Olwyn Ann, which beat Proud Chief and company so decisively on the first day, is also worth respect. Her past record shows she seldom flags once she is in form. The Churchill Handicap is the flrst leg of the 'KA.B. concession double. The second leg. the Telegraph Handicap, will give the brilliant Inglewood filly, Lady Defence, a chance to show she is as capable over seven furlongs as she is over six. But she might be hard pressed to hold Commendable, a solid finisher which will be suited by the seven furlongs. Dashing Lu, which chased home Lady Defence on the first day, should again figure in the finish. The extra furlong will also be to her advantage. The going will be very soft.
