CHARGES HEARD
A Hamilton woman working among orphans in Bombay, Miss Diana Balemi (above), yesterday gave up a long protest fast when charges alleging cruelty to children were heard against her In court, the Press Association reports.
Miss Balemi, aged 32, who looks after 30 orphans in the New Zealand - sponsored Door of Hope Mission in Bombay, pledged to fast to death unless Indian authorities heard the charges against her. However, the chairman of the Door of Hope Society’s board of trustees, Mr V. A. Tait, of Hamilton, received a cable from Bombay yesterday that the case had come up in court and Miss Balemi has begun taking food. The cable said Miss Balemi was much more cheerful yesterday, Mr Tait said, and it indicated that the case should be over by Monday. Miss Balemi has been charged with burning and beating some of the 30 orphans in her care. “But the charges have just been trumped up and Diana is innocent,” Mr Tait said. Miss Balemi has laid charges of brothel-keeping and sly-grogging against other occupants of the building. .
