New Beef Grade For Export

A new grade for export beef is to be introduced from October 1. Its establishment is a consequence of the expansion in dairy beef production.

Announcing the introduction of the new grade today, a member of the New Zealand Meat Grades Committee, Mr A. C. 'Wright, of Dunsandel, said that it would be designated y.a.q. (young average quality) and would apply to all steers and heifers which did not carry sufficient fat cover or were not of the required conformation to be graded f.a.q. Carcases of unsatisfactory colour will not be included in this grade. Two weight ranges will apply—under 4001 b and 4001 b and over. The large majority of animals entering this grade Will be less than two years old. In other beef grades, no restriction will be placed on exporters mixing manufacuring beef trimmed to 90 per cent visual lean derived from the new grade with manufacturing beef from other grades. Primal cuts from this grade must be packed separately

and correctly designated on the carton. The board intends to seek the co-operation of exporters in test marketing of beef from the new y.a.q. grade in various overseas markets.

Mr Wright said that companies in Auckland province had been paying a premium over boner cow schedule prices of as much as 81 per 1001 b for beef having y.a.q. characteristics.
