PROJECT DESIGN ENGINEER (Major Sewer Design Branch) —Position No. 1947. The Major Sewerage Design Branch investigates and designs major projects involving a wide variety of structural and hydraulic engineering works such as major underground pumping stations, deep shafts, tunnels, large hydraulic conduits and sewage purification plants. Investigations range from corrosion problems to environmental studies and the development of experienmtal apparatus. SALARY: 5A7966—5A8173 per annum. DUTIES’ Responsible for the management of a project up to the completion of the design phase including control of the civil, mechanical, electrical and sanitary EXPERIENCE: Substantial design experience with ability in civil engineering design and supervision of design staff is essential. SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER (Mechanical and Electrical Division) —Position No. 1629. SALARY: 5A7446—5A7655 per annum. DUTIES: Responsible for mechanical design and maintenance of equipment associated with tunnelling by mechanical moles, and mechanized spoil removal in Silurian Rock and Compressed Air tunnels. EXPERIENCE: Substantial experience as a Professional Engineer in design, supervision and maintenance of mechanical equipment in tunnelling or mining projects. The appointee will be of excellent health, so enabling him to qualify for the Board’s medical examination for admission to compressed air atmospheres. SUPERVISING ENGINEER (Water Supply Design Branch) —Position No. 2048. This Branch is responsible for the investigation and design of all major works required for the water supply system including storage and service reservoirs, tanks, pumping stations, transfer and distribution mains, and the like necessary for the supply of water to an area of some 500 square miles containing a population of over 2 million persons. Augmentation of supply to this area will necessitate the design of major storage reservoirs and major tunnel conduits together with the associated steel pipelines, conduits, inlet and outlet works and control installations. Some of the duties of the appointees will be to supervise the design of aspects of these augmentation works. SALARY: 5A6925—5A7134 per annum. DUTIES: Detailed design and preparation of estimates and tender documents for civil engineering components of water supply works of a special nature. EXPERIENCE: Experience in the design of water supply works and of major earth, rock and/or concrete dams and/or major tunnels in rock will be of particular value. SECTION ENGINEERS (Water Supply Design Branch) —Position No. 2049. SALARY: 5A6406—5A6613 per annum. DUTIES: Responsible for the investigation and detailed design of civil engineering components of water supply works. EXPERIENCE: Experience and demonstrated ability in hydraulic or structural engineering aspects of civil engineering works necessary. v For the following positions applicants must hold an engineering degree or diploma from a recognised University or Technical Institution. SALARY: Up to 5A6093 per annum according to qualifications and experience. ENGINEERS (Water Supply Design Branch)—Position No. 1685. DUTIES: Assist in the investigation and detailed design of the civil engineering components of water supply works. EXPERIENCE: Experience and demonstrated ability in hydraulic or structural engineering aspects of civil engineering an advantage. ENGINEERS (Construction Branch)—Position No. 2085 The Construction Branch is responsible for the following works which are in progress or about to start. 1. The South Eastern Sewerage System—a projcet already in progress, and including tunnels, pumping stations and a large purification complex. (Cost in excess of SAlOOmillion). 2. The Thomson Project—where a contract has been let for the first stage of the Thomson Tunnel at a total cost of approximately SA2S million. 3. The Cardinia Creek Dam. 4. Major water supply pipelines. 5 Metropolitan Works for water supply, sewerage or main drainage. DUTIES: Under the direction of a senior construction engineer, the appointee will be engaged on the supervision of one of the works listed above being constructed by day labour or by contract. EXPERIENCE: Experience on the supervision of civil engineering works, either by day labour or by contract, would be deemed an advantage. Opportunities also exist for specialised research in the fields of regional and urban studies, population geography and land use management.
