BIRDS AT AIRPORTS

Progress On Problem

W.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, July 4. Accidents and near misses involving birds at New Zealand airports had been reduced by 30 per cent in the last year, the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) said in Parliament this week. Routine scaring had been carried out with cars at airports. Some birds had been poisoned and others shot, Mr Gordon said.

Poison had also been used to kill insect life on the ground near airports to make it less attractive for birds to congregate there, he said in answer to a question. New Zealand would be represented at a conference in Canada in September on bird hazards, he said.
