OVERSEAS TRADING

SYDNEY The Sydney sharemarket opened on a cautious note yesterday, and although trading activity picked up in the afternoon there was little change in the over-all position at the close. Many of the leading indicators made small gains. B.H.P. put on 5c to 1610 c and Mount Isa gained 8c to 994 c. New Broken Hill, which has made a strong recovery in the last week, closed 10c higher at 1610 c. C.R.A. was down 20c at its closing price of 18.00 c, but the contribs finished 20c higher at 1120 c. MELBOURNE The Melbourne mining and oil market held to a steady course yesterday. again showing greater strength in the afternoon than in early trading. Some leading market stocks lost ground. In spite of the afternoon upturn. Hamersley, Western Mining, C.R.A., Ampol Exploration and Queensland Mines, all closed slightly lower than Thursday’s levels. Vam put on 30c to 830 c and Scamander stood out with a jump of 17c to 72c. The stock has gained 38c during the last week. Overall; rises tn the mining and oil section slightly outnumbered falls. B.H.P. finished the week on a- buoyant note, selling up to 1630 C and closing at 1620 e. up 20c on the day.
