SIGNALMAN RETIRING

22 Years “In The Tower”

After 22 years service with the Lyttelton Harbour Board, Mr D. S. Wood, a signalman at the harbour signal tower, will retire on Sunday. Mr Wood will finish his last shift at 4 p.m. on that day and, he says, “will begin to catch up on all the odd jobs that have been missed over the last 10 years.” Since he joined the board's staff in 1946 he has seen a lot of changes, many of them in the field of signals. “For one thing I have seen three different code books come and go,” he said. "Perhaps the greatest change has been that now I can pick up a telephone and speak to a ship, whereas when I first went to sea, before I joined the board, we had a crystal set with an amplifier and a maximum range of 100 miles.” Mr Wood intends to maintain his interest in the sea and the port from his Diamond Harbour home, but his retirement does not end the association of his family with the Harbour Board, for his son. Captain W. Wood, is one of the board’s pilots.
