The chance of an open Davis Cup competition has disappeared for at least another 12 months. Delegates to the Davis Cup nations’ annual conference voted heavily against the idea yesterday. A proposal by France, backed by the United States and the Netherlands, that the Davis Cup should be open to a player of any category who is not under suspension failed to obtain the necessary two-thirds majority. Twenty-one nations voted against, 19 in favour.
