Scottish Bowling Thrashed By N.Z.

(From R. T. BRITTENDEN, N.Z.P.A. special correspondent)

GLASGOW. Fiercely aggressive batting of good quality by all the top New Zealand batsmen and a typically rollicking Minings from B. R. Taylor as No. 7 has given New Zealand a very good chance of winning its match with Scotland.

Against bowling remarkable more for earnest endeavour than its pace or guile, New Zealand scored 364 yesterday in 293 minutes to finish with 409 for eight declared.

“In the final hour Scotland, trailing by 198 inns, lost three wickets for 38.

In the two hours to lunch New Zealand scored 138 for two. In the 125 minutes to tea two more wickets were lost but 173 runs added.

The steady pressure of the morning had a beneficial effect on the later batsmen. M. G. Burgess led the way with a finely-made 95, Taylor scored his 87 in 79 minutes, and B. W. Yuile played well for 81. Rather Flattering B. A. G. Murray, B. F. Hastings, Burgess, K. J. Wadsworth and Yuile middled and timed the ball in a most satisfactory manner. But, perhaps, it was all, rather flattering. Taylor, as usual, was a lawj to himself with a mixture of glorious strokes and others far less orthodox,, although 8

just as productive. There was good and honest effort from the opening bowler, E. R. Thompson, and before lunch, a steady spell of left-arm slow bowling from M. J. Allan. But otherwise the batsmen had a good opportunity to discover form and confidence. Rapid Scoring Hastings was in fine fettle until he tried to turn to the on side a ball which left him and took off the stump. Burgess, batting fluently and forcefully, and, Wadsworth who hit many gloriously clean shots, added 55 in 36 minutes. Then Burgess and Yuile shared a stand of 104. Burgess, in for 163 minutes, hit 10 fours and was out immediately after he had hit a fine six. He tried for another to reach his century and was caught in the region j between gully and third man. Taylor and Yuile shared an incredible partnership of 129 in 76 minutes and at one

stage advanced the score by 50 in 23 minutes. Taylor’s fierce driving and ballooning great hits might have been expected, but Yuile astonished everyone with his audacity and range of firm strokes. He borrowed liberally from the older masters, using the Compton sweep and, on occasions, the Cowdrey drive to fine leg. “Little Fuhrer” Yuile was leading the side in the absence of V. Pollard, who was confined to bed with a gastric complaint. On the way to the ground in the morning he was asked the likely effect of his new powers. He said that by the end of the day he would be known as the “Littue Fuehrer of Hamilton Crescent.” It was certainly a masterful display which he will certainly not be allowed to forget. , Taylor looked quite likely to leave his best time for a century this season of 101 minutes far behind. Had he done so the team would have benefited by a substantial prize. He was bowled after scoring 87 in 79 minutes, a time which would have been materially reduced had he not thoughtlessly sent the ball twice out of the ground to effect no little damage among parked cars in the street. He had nine fours along with his two sixes. At the end of the day, Taylor struck again as he and R. O. Collinge shared an antagonistic spell of bowling with the new ball.
