Chinese Customs

Sir,-4The reference in “The Press”jtwo days ago to the old Chinese customs in Singapore bring back unwelcome memories of the past in China itself. Such things as unwanted girl babies and the beating of wives are relics of the past there. Probably they practise foot-binding in Singapore, too. Who knows? Han Suyin, in her last book, describes bow she married a Kuomintang general who later became Ambassador to Great Britain about the year 1944. She tells of the frequent beatings she had to endure from her husband. As for baby girls, they were simply put out on the street to die. Now all these things have disappeared from China; instead, men and women are equal, and all children are welcomed—and the population of China goes up 13 million a year, which, after all, is only a 2 per cent increase. Who can deny that this is good?— Yours, etc., P.J.A July 3, 1969.
