Hire Purchase

Sir,—Modern techniques of persuasion make it easy for the socially-irresponsible type of businessman to induce people to go into debt; particularly so with the mentallyimmature, the credulous, the feckless and, sometimes, the economically unfortunate. Such people need help and protection, but, too often, are regarded as the easy marks for exploitation. Much of the advertising world is engaged in such persuasion. “Wear it now; pay later.” “Enjoy your holiday now; pay later.” “You owe it to yourself,” etc. A large sector of our potential work force is engaged in such unproductive activities. Another sector busies itself with recording and collecting the resultant debts with their exorbitant interest. Should dunning fail the law is invoked. All these activities are well within the law, but by other than legal standards leave something to be desired. Their prevalence bodes 111 for our social and economic future. —Yours, etc., SCRUTINEER . July 3, 1969.
